Argentina's president Javier Milei has called for a Hong Kong-style handover of the Falkland Islands, declaring "they're ours" in his latest challenge to British sovereignty over the archipelago.

The Mirror reports Milei demanding the handover model, while the Mail carries former Falklands War veteran Simon Weston dismissing the threat as "ridiculous". The Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Prime Minister Andy Burnham of showing weakness that Argentina "can smell".

The Hong Kong comparison is doing considerable work. Hong Kong was a leased territory with a treaty expiry date; the Falklands are not leased and Britain holds no obligation to negotiate their status. The islanders voted in a sovereignty referendum; on a turnout of ninety-two percent, they chose to remain British. Argentina's claim rests on proximity and inherited Spanish assertions; Britain's rests on continuous administration since the eighteen-thirties and the express wish of the population. The Hong Kong frame implies a deadline that does not exist.

Watch whether Downing Street responds directly to Milei or holds to the settled position that the islands' status is not negotiable while their inhabitants wish to remain British. The referendum result remains the Government's standing answer.
