Kent Police had advance notice of a planned anti-migration protest at Dover port the day before masked activists blocked access to the ferry terminal, according to the Mirror. The demonstration was led by Danny Tommo, whose real name is Daniel Thomas and who has previous convictions.

The same group staged protests outside the Daily Mail's offices in balaclava masks. Prime Minister Andy Burnham criticised what he called "appalling" abuse directed at RNLI volunteers by anti-migration protesters - the lifeboat service has faced sustained harassment at several coastal stations for its role in rescuing people from the Channel.

The sequence raises the old question about public order policing: when the state knows a disruption is coming and lets it happen anyway, what is being managed? Protesters blocking a working port is not speech - it is obstruction. The RNLI crews are doing what Parliament requires: maritime law obliges rescue at sea regardless of why someone is in the water. Directing anger at volunteers executing a statutory duty suggests either ignorance of the law or a deliberate strategy to make the work impossible through intimidation.

The test is consistency. If environmental activists blocked Dover with a day's notice, the comparison writes itself. If this protest was policed to a different standard, the question is why - and if it was not, the question is whether advance notice and tolerance of port obstruction is now the general rule.
