Farage wins by-election as questions over Reform UK finances persist
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Nigel Farage has won a by-election for Reform UK, but the Mirror reports the public "deserve answers" over the party's finances despite the victory. The paper says questions over Reform UK's funding arrangements "won't stop" following the result.
The by-election win comes as the Prime Minister faces pressure on multiple fronts in his first weeks in office. GB News reports Andy Burnham has been urged to "rapidly expand prison capacity" amid public anger over the early release of PC Andrew Harper's killers. The outlet broadcast a direct plea from Harper's mother to the Prime Minister. Separately, the Mirror says Burnham is being urged to "step up" on child poverty as families struggle through the summer holidays, while GB News carries a farmer's accusation that the Prime Minister is "out of touch" over the recently announced drought relief package, calling the £65 million "too late".
The juxtaposition is instructive. One opposition leader secures a seat while fielding questions about party funding. The governing party's new leader fields questions about prisons, poverty and farming - the standing machinery of government that persists regardless of the by-election calendar. The Mirror frames it plainly: "While Nigel Farage argued with a bin, Andy Burnham got to work improving people's lives."
The Daily Express, meanwhile, reports military figures have warned Burnham that the armed forces "need answers on funding" as adversaries "marvel at UK complacency". The warnings span defence capacity, prison capacity, and the social safety net - the permanent questions that outlast any by-election cycle.
What to watch: how Burnham responds to the prison capacity pressure, and whether Reform UK addresses the outstanding questions on its finances before the next electoral test.
